Choreographer Close-Up: Mark Morris

Mark Morris is a major force in the world of dance!  As one of the world’s most acclaimed choreographers and artistic director of the Mark Morris Dance Group, he is returning to create his eighth commissioned work on SF Ballet. Opening on Valentine’s Day (Program 2), the world premiere of Beaux is an all-male ballet danced by nine men.

A dancer himself, Mark Morris performed with major dance companies in his early career, then went on to form his own company in 1980; a decade later he worked alongside Mikhail Baryshnikov to create the White Oak Dance Project.

Mark’s passion for music is evident in his dances as well as the curriculum he sets for The School at Mark Morris Morris Dance Center.

Here at SFB, the dancers are always thrilled to work with Mr. Morris, as Helgi Tomasson recently noted: “…I think he very much likes working with our dancers and we love having him here. He’s not predictable, his works tend to be very different from one another and you don’t know what he’s going to do next time, which I very much like…”

It must be a great opportunity to get to work with a choreographer like him.

I just witnessed the premiere tonight, February 14, 2012. It was a pure celebration of the music by Bohuslav Martinu. The dancers mirrored the music of the strings of the harpsichord. The male dancers, partnering the other male dancers, were like cupids sending the dancers into strong, beautiful motion. I am always uplifted by Morris’ choreography and his interpretation of the music he choses.
